Seoul Viosys announced on the 28th that it will deliver 25 gigabit (Gbps) laser diode Big Cell (VCSEL) for short-range use to three customers. The company begins mass production of Big Cell in the first quarter.

Bigcell is a laser diode (LD) that converts electrical signals into optical signals. It is attracting attention as a communication technology using light that realizes high-speed data communication in 5G environment. It can be used for augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR), 3D sensing and Time of Flight (ToF), and LiDAR for vehicles.

Seoul Viosys will mass-produce Big Cell from the first quarter with approval for sensors from three customers. The 25Gbps big cell mass-produced this time emits light vertically from a semiconductor substrate and supports fast communication in the form of an aggregate of data arranged according to certain rules. Currently, two-six (II-VI) in the US, Lumentum, and Broadcom are major operators.

Bigcell can implement single channel and 4 channels. When using 4 channels, it is possible to transmit and receive high-quality data and high-quality data up to 100 gigabits (Gbps). The company explained that the vertical light Big Cell, where the light comes out, has a higher technical difficulty, but has a higher price competitiveness than the horizontal method, where the light comes out, and has a wide range of applications.

Seoul Viosys is in the process of approving a vehicle system company by applying Big Cell technology to LiDAR.

A company official said, “With the paradigm shift in the untact era, the importance of big cells for the Internet of Things (IoT) environment has increased,” and said, “We will research and develop big cell technologies for expanding applications such as smart cities and autonomous driving based on 5G communication.”
