The Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education conducts an investigation into whether all sports clubs in Seoul are complying with the quarantine regulations. This is a follow-up action following the group infection of student athletes at Gwangmun High School in Seoul.
On the 8th, an official from the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education said, “We are going to investigate the current status of the number of student athletes registered in the sports club.” He said, “First, we will check the registration status through the school and ask for cooperation from the Seoul Football Association.”
According to the Seoul Metropolitan Government, 15 students at Gwangmun High School in Gangdong-gu, Seoul, were confirmed to have a novel coronavirus infection (Corona 19) until the 7th. Of these, 14 are active as student players. The other one was identified as a student who took classes with them.
Gwangmun High School, where two students were confirmed for the first time on the 5th, is currently halting school and conducting an epidemiological investigation. As diagnostic tests are being conducted for all students and faculty, there is a possibility of additional confirmed cases. The Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education is also reviewing special scholarships for Gwangmun High School after the epidemiological investigation.
According to the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education, after the football department was disbanded in November last year, student players at Gwangmun High School have been camping at the sports club’Gwangmun FC’ near the school. The sports club is a private facility registered with the Seoul Football Association, but like the school sports department, registered students are recognized as athletes and can enter the competition.
In January, the Ministry of Education announced a plan to strengthen the quarantine rules of the school sports department in order to prevent infection in the group of student athletes. The reinforcement plan included measures such as limiting the density within the school sports department, but it does not apply to sports clubs, which are private facilities. The sports club is in the blind spot of the education authorities’ measures to strengthen the management of student athletes.
An official from the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education said, “So far, we have not been able to determine whether the student athletes are staying outside camps,” he said.
