Impact of easing the minimum criteria for regional balance selection

The competition rate for regular recruitment of Seoul National University in 2021 was 3.82:1. It was slightly higher than the competition rate for regular recruitment in the previous year.
According to Seoul National University on the 10th, as a result of the closing of the application for regular admission for the 2021 school year the previous day, 3,049 people applied for the 798 recruitment, and the competition rate was 3.82:1. Last year, 2,920 people applied for 859 recruitment, which was 3.40:1.
At the beginning of the 2021 school year, the competition rate was expected to decline nationwide. The decrease in the school-age population decreases the number of candidates, and accordingly, the number of recruits carried over from time to time to regular time increases. But when I opened the lid, the competition rate for Seoul National University increased.
In view of the new coronavirus infection (Corona 19) situation, it is interpreted that the number of personnel carried over on time was significantly reduced as Seoul National University eased some screening criteria from time to time. When it was pointed out that high school 3 students could be at a disadvantage in college admission due to the Corona 19 situation, Seoul National University lowered the minimum standard of the regional balance line development type from’within 2 grades in 3 areas’ to’within 3 grades in 3 areas’. Accordingly, the regional balanced selection recruitment rate jumped from 87.4% in the previous year (661 people were selected for 756 recruitment) to 97% this year (738 people were selected for 761 recruitment).
The increase in the number of additional pass notifications, which was only one time in the previous year, from the 2021 admission screening, also affected the number of carry-overs. Against this background, the number of people carried over from time to time has drastically decreased from 177 in the previous year to 47 in 2021.
There is also an analysis that a number of high-ranking candidates show a pattern of support in anticipation of re-entry due to the government’s expansion of admissions centered on regular SAT. Jong-woon Oh, the evaluation director of Jongno Academy’s Sky Education, commented, “As the 2021 SAT was presented with discrimination in Korean and mathematics, there was a lot of support from those who scored high scores in the natural field.”
The actual pre-medical department (3.63 to 1) and veterinary pre-medicine (5 to 1) showed different forms of support from last year, so the competition rate just before the deadline (at 3 p.m.) recorded 3.17 to 1 and 4.17 to 1, respectively. There was no change. Lee Man-ki, director of the U-Way Education Evaluation Research Institute, analyzed, “The fact that there is no significant change between the competition rate just before the deadline and the final result means that there are many applicants.”
Regular applications for the 2021 school year are accepted from the 7th to the 11th for each university for more than 3 days. Most universities such as Korea University, Sogang University, Sungkyunkwan University, Yonsei University, Chung-Ang University, and Hanyang University close applications on the 11th.
