Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Kun-hee, who died on October 25 last year, was held on the 1st at the Korean Buddhist Jogye Order Jingwansa Temple in Eunpyeong-gu, Seoul. Bereaved family members including Hong Ra-hee, former director of the Samsung Leeum Museum of Art, attended. Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong, who was imprisoned in prison, was unable to attend, and his eldest son paid for him instead.

Chairman Lee’s 100-day rehabilitation took place this morning. Former Director Hong, Hotel Shilla President Lee Bu-jin, Samsung Welfare Foundation Chairman Lee Seo-hyun, and Vice Chairman Lee’s eldest son attended the 100 days together. In accordance with the current social distancing policy, only 5 or more members of the immediate family could not gather together (based on the non-domestic immediate family). The Samsung Group said, “The survivors follow the government’s quarantine guidelines and try to honor the deceased as quietly as possible.”

Since Chairman Lee passed away in the morning of October 25 last year, Vice-Chairman Lee and his bereaved family paid 49 indemnity for the deceased’s mortuary at Jingwansa Temple. 49 and 100 days are Buddhist rituals to pray for the rebirth of the deceased. The 1st is exactly the 100th day since Chairman Lee passed away. President Lee was well known as a member of Won Buddhism during his lifetime, but his family decided to hold a post-mortem ceremony at the Jogye Order temple.

Vice-Chairman Lee attended the 49th meeting every 7 days until December 12 last year. However, on the 18th of last month, he was sentenced to two years and six months in prison at a repatriation trial for the abandonment of the Gukjeong Nongdan trial and is being held in a Seoul detention center. Vice-Chairman Lee and the Special Prosecutors’ Team Park Young-soo both gave up re-appeal, and the brother was confirmed as it was. Vice-Chairman Lee, who has already been jailed after being investigated for one year from February 2017, must meet the remaining one year and six months in prison without the government’s amnesty.
