Despite the ban on the use of the Seoul Plaza, the Seoul Metropolitan Government decided to impose compensation for the incense burner of the late Paik Ki-wan, director of the Institute for Unification Studies.

The Seoul Metropolitan Government announced this policy on the afternoon of the 19th, after the ceremony for holding Baek at Seoul Plaza. A city official explained that it will be imposed next week, saying, “You have to check and calculate the occupied area that has changed by time zone, so it takes time to calculate the amount of compensation.” He also added, “We are reviewing various data to determine whether (the operation of this incense burner or ceremony) is a violation of the infectious disease prevention method.”

Seoul City has banned the use of Seoul Plaza from February last year to March 31 of this year to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus infection (Corona 19). In addition, in Seoul and other metropolitan areas, an administrative order is being enforced in accordance with the second stage of social distancing. The’Nonamegi World’s Chairman Baek Ki-wan’s Funeral Committee’, which hosted the ceremony, installed an incense in the Seoul Plaza without a permission to use the plaza on the 18th, and voluntarily demolished it after the ceremony on the 19th.

Prior to this, Seoul City General Affairs Manager Kim Hyuk said at an online briefing on Corona 19 in the morning, saying, “I am very sorry for the situation in which incense burners are arbitrarily installed in Seoul Plaza, where use is restricted to prevent the spread of Corona 19, and the ceremony is being held.” . He emphasized, “The ban on gatherings of more than 100 people must be observed,” he said. “Accordingly, we will closely monitor whether the quarantine rules are well observed during the ceremony.”

In addition, when the funeral committee raised doubts that the late Mayor Park Won-soon was allowed to install an incense burner, Kim said, “(July 10, last year) At the time of installation of the late Mayor Park Won-soon, the number of coronavirus daily confirmed cases was 35 nationwide, and 8 Seoul. Contrary to what was previously, the number of confirmed patients today (new as of 0 o’clock) reached 561 nationwide, 180 people in Seoul, and the number of small businesses was also limited.
