Novartis Korea announced on the 10th that the Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research (NIBR) has selected and announced the selection and presentation of excellent medical researchers from around the world who receive funding from the’NIBR Global Scholars Program’.

In Korea, Professor Jun-Yup Lee of the Department of Ophthalmology at Asan Hospital in Seoul was selected. Through this program, Professor Lee will receive funding for the next three years to conduct research on the development of a new drug for macular degeneration, which has no cure yet.

“The innovative research support program of Novartis Korea is a strategic initiative to support groundbreaking projects that set new definitions for treatment,” said Josh Benugopal, CEO of Novartis Korea. “We have proven our research capabilities.”

The Global Innovation Research Support Program, launched last year, is the first project at NIBR, and is a global research project that provides funding for researchers around the world with innovative ideas for the development and commercialization of new drugs to exert influence.

Researchers selected for the project receive a total of 1 million dollars (about 1.1 billion won) of research funding to conduct research at their institution for the next three years. In addition, each researcher can be provided with specialized knowledge on a specific research area of ​​the project through partnerships with experts from NIBR.

In this program, six medical researchers were selected out of about 700 applicants by comprehensively evaluating the capabilities of 38 leading research institutes in nine countries and the proposals of their affiliated researchers.
