In the first poll conducted after the unification of opposition candidates for the 4/7 Seoul Mayor’s by-election, it was found on the 25th that candidate Oh Se-hoon outperformed Park Young-sun and Democratic Party candidates by nearly 20 percentage points. In particular, the approval rate of candidate Oh in their twenties was the highest, excluding those aged 60 or older and the elderly.

First public opinion poll after unification

As a result of asking 806 people aged 18 or older living in Seoul to vote for which candidate to vote for on the 24th, the day after the unification was achieved at OhmyNews’ request, 55% of the respondents said, “Oh, I will choose a candidate”. It was 18.5 percentage points higher than the answer (36.5%) saying “I will choose a candidate.” It is a difference that is significantly outside the margin of error (±3.5% points at the 95% confidence level).

By age, Candidate Oh led the way in his 20s (18-29 years old) and 60s, but in his 20s, candidate Oh’s approval reached 60.1%, nearly three times that of Park. Park’s approval rating (21.1%) in his 20s was lower than those of the 60s and older and the elderly (26.7%), who had strong propensity to support the opposition party.

The only age group that sent more support to Park was in their 40s. The approval ratings for candidates in their 40s were 57.9% for Park and 34.7% for Oh. In the 50s who led the democratization movement in the 1980s, Candidate Oh (47.1%) and Candidate Park (45.2%) engaged in a close battle within the margin of error.

By region of residence, Candidate Oh surpassed Candidate Park in all regions, including ▶ Northwest (53.1%) ▶ Northeast (49.4%) ▶ Gangseo (56.6%) ▶ Gangnam (62.8%). Candidate Park showed approval ratings such as ▶ Northwest region (39.2%) ▶ Northeast region (42.6%) ▶ Gangseo region (34.6%) ▶ Gangnam region (28.2%).

57.9% of candidate Oh and 36.4% of Park’s approval rate were among the active voters who said, “I will definitely vote in this election”. In the poll willingness to vote, 95.5% of respondents said “I will vote”, which was overwhelmingly high.

On the other hand, the party’s support was 37.7% of the people’s power, 30.1% of the Democratic Party, 9.1% of the People’s Party, 5% of the Justice Party, and 3.7% of the Open Democratic Party.
