On the 17th, Candidate Se-hoon Oh and Nationalist Party candidate Ahn Cheol-soo failed to come up with a final agreement for unification on the 17th.
Chung Yang-seok, secretary general of the People’s Power, and Lee Tae-gyu, secretary general of the National Assembly Party, who lead the two candidate working-level negotiations, met with reporters at around 9:20 pm on the 17th and explained the negotiation process in this way. The negotiating team conveyed the position of each candidate and announced that the negotiations would end on this day because they could not find a point of contact. The negotiating team plans to hold an internal meeting on the proposal presented by each candidate and then re-negotiate in the morning of tomorrow (18th).
There are even signs of a prolonged battle between candidate Oh Se-hoon and National Party candidate Ahn Cheol-soo over the unification of Seoul Mayor’s opposition candidates. This is because both sides are continuing a nerve war over questions and methods of polls. Accordingly, the prospect of exceeding the 19 days originally set as the unified deadline is raised. There is an atmosphere that does not rule out the possibility that unification negotiations will continue until the 29th, which is the start date of printing the ballot.
Some point out that either of the two candidates has the intention to capture the public’s attention as a single issue. It is also suggested that if the gap between the two sides in the opinion polls widens as time goes by, they naturally consider’unification by public opinion’ in mind.
However, in the opposition party, voices are pouring out for a massive consensus in that a prolonged period of unification negotiations may face a headwind of public opinion.
