[아시아경제 정현진 기자] Amid reports that Samsung Electronics is considering expanding its semiconductor plant in the US,’Love Calls’ to attract Samsung in the US are following. In anticipation of securing jobs in large factories, they are reaching out in Austin, New York and other places, but Samsung Electronics still maintains the position that’nothing has been decided’.

According to the office of the Senate Representative of the US Democratic Party, Chuck Schumer on the 29th (local time), he recently contacted high-ranking Samsung Electronics officials and said he wishes to build a Samsung Electronics semiconductor factory in his local district, New York State. “Samsung’s project will be a very exciting and potential game changer in the region,” said Dr. Schumer. “I strongly support the plan to build a semiconductor chip fab in Genesee County that will have 1,900 workers.”

“The world-class workforce in western New York combined with considerable experience in the semiconductor manufacturing and R&D sectors is perfect for building a new facility for Samsung,” said Dr. Schumer, who stressed that he is ready to help Samsung. He also said that Samsung was relying on it in the United States, referring to the fact that he promoted the’CHIPS’ bill, which is a support measure to attract overseas semiconductor factories to the United States, and the foundry bill to expand the US semiconductor manufacturing facilities.

Mr. Schumer’s actions came amid reports that Samsung Electronics will establish or expand a semiconductor plant in the United States. Bloomberg News said on the 21st, “Samsung Electronics is considering a plan to build a semiconductor plant in Texas, US by investing more than 10 billion dollars (about 11 trillion won).” “We are discussing to establish in the company.” The next day, on the 22nd, the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) also reported, “Samsung Electronics is considering investing $17 billion to build a semiconductor plant in Arizona, Texas or New York.”

When the report came out, Texas Governor Greg Ebot said on his Twitter on the 23rd, linking a local media article stating that Samsung Electronics is considering the establishment of a $10 billion semiconductor factory in Texas. “Texas led the US economy in 2020. It has a good start in 2021.”

On the 25th, Judge KP George County, Chief Executive Officer of Fort Band County, Texas, told Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Kim Ki-nam, “Texas is a business-friendly area with no corporate and personal income taxes. Highly skilled workforce and infrastructure, deregulation, etc. Local foreign media reported that they sent an open letter stating that there is an advantage. “Fort Band County is now an attractive destination for major IT companies like Amazon, Dell, Tesla and HP, making it an ideal hub for business operations.” Judge KP George said, “We welcome Samsung with open arms” on his personal Twitter.

However, despite this love call, Samsung Electronics is holding on to the position that “it has not been decided yet” regarding new investments in semiconductor factories in the US. Samsung Electronics’ memory division vice president Han Jin-man said in a conference call for the 4th quarter of last year and annual results announcement, “Because of the nature of the foundry business, expanding production capacity to quickly respond to customer demand is a constant review.” , We are reviewing the site for all regions, including Austin, USA.”
