“Securing future technology is a matter of survival. Read changes and preoccupy the future.”
On the 6th, vice chairman of Samsung Electronics Lee Jae-yong visited Samsung Research, which is called the’heart of Samsung’s R&D’, and checked mid- to long-term new projects. Vice-Chairman Lee, who has been accelerating on-site management from the beginning of the new year, is interpreted as emphasizing the message that the future of Samsung depends on the development of new technologies. Samsung Research is an integrated research organization in the set division of Samsung Electronics and is in charge of research and development of advanced technologies in future promising fields such as artificial intelligence (AI) and 6G (6th generation mobile communication).
Vice-Chairman Lee presided over a meeting of the presidents of the set division at Samsung Research in Woomyeon-dong, Seocho-gu, Seoul, and reviewed the future mid- to long-term strategies such as next-generation 6G technology and AI R&D status. In addition, it received reports on the progress of research on next-generation communication technology, securing technology for servers, and application of AI technology products.
In addition to Vice Chairman Lee, Hyunsuk Kim, Head of CE Division, Dongjin Ko, Head of IM Division, Yunho Choi, Head of Management Support Dept., Sebastian Seung, Head of Samsung Research Research Institute, Jonghee Han, Head of Video Display Division, Head of Video Display Division, Taemoon Roh, Head of Wireless Division, Head of Network Business Division Jeon Jeon, Jaeseung Lee, Head of Household Appliances Division, Samsung SDS President Hwang Seong-woo and others attended.
Vice-Chairman Lee presided over the prior technology development meeting at Samsung Research as a move to secure future growth engines in the post-corona era.
In 2018, Vice Chairman Lee selected core technologies essential for realizing the 4th industrial revolution, such as next-generation mobile communications such as AI and 5G (5th generation), and semiconductors for automotive electronics, as Samsung’s “future fostering projects,” and is spurring new business development. In particular, next-generation mobile communication is a business that Vice Chairman Lee has been fostering for 10 years.
In accordance with Vice Chairman Lee’s will to foster the next-generation telecommunications business, Samsung began preemptively preparing to lead the 6G field. In July of last year, the first among global telecommunications companies to unveil a 6G white paper,’A new level of hyper-connectivity experience’, is a representative example of the next generation 6G vision. A Samsung official explained, “Since 6G can be used as an infrastructure technology that leads the convergence of various industries such as AI, semiconductors, and smartphones, it is the judgment of Lee that it is the framework of the future that Samsung Electronics draws.”
Vice Chairman Lee is also active in fostering AI business. Immediately after the business resumed in 2018, he visited Europe and North America for his first overseas business trips, exchanged with global scholars in the field of AI, grasping the latest trends, and also began recruiting key talents. Following the recruitment of Professor Daniel Lee of the University of Pennsylvania, an authority in the field of next-generation machine learning algorithms and robotics, and Professor Gu-Yeon Yu, a world-renowned scholar in the field of low-power and high-performance AI processors, Harvard University professor Sebastian Seung, a world-renowned AI expert, was conducted by Samsung Research Recruited as a warden.
Vice-Chairman Lee visited the Pyeongtaek plant on the 4th of the year as his first move on the 4th and attended the ceremony for bringing in production facilities for the foundry (consignment of semiconductor production), and is starting to manage the site for the third consecutive day. On the 5th, he visited the Suwon plant to inspect the network equipment production line, and visited the Global Technology Center (GTC) to preside over a production technology innovation meeting.
The business community believes that the focus of Vice Chairman Lee’s field management at the beginning of this year is not only on preparing for the future but also on fulfilling corporate social responsibility. It is explained that he showed his determination to fulfill his promise and determination to make a Samsung suitable for Korean nationality through bold challenges to future technologies.
Vice-Chairman Lee said, “Let’s focus solely on enhancing the value of the company and contributing to society,” while visiting Samsung Research on the same day. “Let’s take responsibility as a leading company dozens of times and hundreds of times.” This is a remark in line with what he said in the final statement of the decision to cancel the case of Gukjeong Nonongdan at the end of last month, “It is a natural responsibility as an entrepreneur to discover new businesses, expand their business and grow the company.” In fact, foundry, AI, and 6G, which Vice Chairman Lee reviewed in the new year, are considered the next-generation growth engines that will determine the future at the national level as well as Samsung. In particular, AI and 5G are also the core of the’Korean version of the New Deal policy’ promoted by the government.
