Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics are expected to compete for leadership in the premium TV market in the new year with mini LED TVs.
Mini LED TVs are basically LCD TVs. It is an LCD TV that uses a mini LED, which means an LED chipset with a size of 100 to 200 micrometers, as a backlight unit (BLU). The number of LED chips has increased significantly, and light-emitting elements have been arranged more closely than conventional LCDs.
The mini LED TV has clearer image quality compared to the existing LCD, and more accurate black color (contrast ratio) is possible. The disadvantage of LCD TV, which was pointed out as a limitation compared to OLED TV, is improved. In terms of black expression, OLED is superior to LCD.

Samsung Electronics held the’Samsung First Look 2021′ event online on the 6th (U.S. local time) and announced a 2021-year’Neo QLED’ with mini LED technology.
Neo QLED is characterized by applying’Quantum Mini LED’. Compared to the existing LED device used as a backlight, more devices are arranged by implementing a size of 1/40.
This product finely adjusts the brightness of the quantum mini LED used as a backlight to 12 bits (4,96 steps) through’Quantum Matrix Technology’. The backlight power control allows for finer adjustment of more local dimming zones to achieve industry-leading contrast and black details.
It also has a’neo quantum processor’. A newly applied learning-type AI upscaling technology composed of 16 neural networks raises the 8K and 4K resolutions to the highest level, respectively, regardless of the quality of the input image.
New Samsung Neo QLED products will be released in 8K and 4K, and will be introduced to the global market in the first quarter.
■’LG QNED’… Less than half the price of OLED TVs
Prior to this, LG Electronics held an online technology briefing last month and released’LG QNED’. The LG QNED TV backlight has a mini LED that is less than 1/10 the size of the light source compared to the existing LCD TV.
LG QNED is equipped with about 30,000 mini LEDs based on 86-inch 8K resolution. There are about 2,500 local dimming areas.
This product applied’Quantum Nano Cell Color Technology’, a new technology that utilizes nanocell and quantum dot-based technologies at the same time. The light from the backlight passes through the nanocells and quantum dot materials to express the pure color closer to the real world.

It is expected that QNED TV will have more price competitiveness than existing OLED TVs. The company explained that the price will be less than half of that of OLED TV based on 8K TV.
Meanwhile, according to the market research firm Stone Partners, the size of the mini LED TV market for the new year is estimated to be 1.7 million units. Since then, it is expected to show double-digit growth every year, increasing to 3.01 million units in 2022, 4.67 million units in 2023, and 7 million units in 2024.
