Samsung Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong begins new year’s first schedule with Pyeongtaek foundry inspection

Discuss ways to promote mutual cooperation with representatives of suppliers

Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong attended the ceremony for bringing in foundry production facilities at Pyeongtaek 2nd factory on the 4th as the first schedule of the new year. It is reported that the representatives of suppliers who attended the ceremony for bringing in production facilities on this day also discussed ways to foster the domestic semiconductor ecosystem and promote mutual cooperation.

Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong emphasized, “Let’s create a myth in system semiconductors by cooperating with Samsung Electronics and partner companies, academia, and research institutions to create a healthy ecosystem.”

Pyeongtaek Plant 2 is Samsung Electronics’ latest plant. Construction began in 2018 with a total investment of 30 trillion won. Pyeongtaek Plant 2 is built with a foundry line using state-of-the-art DRAM, 7th generation V-NAND production line, and EUV (extreme ultraviolet) exposure equipment. After producing memory semiconductors last year, it is planned to bring in facilities for foundry production this year.

This day’s event is meaningful in that it was attended with partners. In addition to Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Ki Nam, Foundry Business Manager Choi Si-young, ▲ Lee Yong-han, chairman of Wonik IPS ▲ PSK Vice Chairman Park Kyung-soo ▲ Lee Woo-kyung, ASML Korea representative ▲ Lee Joon-hyuk, Dongjin Semichem vice chairman ▲ Jeong Ji-wan, chairman of Soulbrain, etc. Vice-Chairman Lee received reports on joint projects with partners. They also visited the construction site of the 3rd plant in Pyeongtaek and encouraged employees.

Since the early 2010s, Samsung has jointly developed technology with major equipment and parts suppliers. Since last year, it has also been promoting’equipment parts joint development’ with major domestic facility partners and secondary and tertiary parts partners.

Vice-Chairman Lee announced’Semiconductor Vision 2030′ in 2019 and is directly taking care of the system semiconductor business. By 2030, it plans to invest 133 trillion won to achieve the world’s No. 1 system semiconductor.

Samsung Electronics is supporting small and medium-sized fabless companies in Korea in addition to investment and employment expansion for this purpose. ▲Process design support ▲Prototype production support ▲Expanding technology education aims to foster an ecosystem.
