Samsung SDI (006400)Is investing close to 1 trillion won in a plant in Hungary, which is a base for battery production in Europe, to significantly increase production capacity. It is in the form of accelerating its penetration into the European market, which has been driven by the policy to expand eco-friendly cars.
According to the industry on the 23rd, Samsung SDI decided to invest about 940 billion won in a Hungarian subsidiary on that day. Samsung SDI is operating an electric vehicle battery plant with a scale of about 30 gigawatt hours (GWh) in Goed, northern Hungary. It serves as a base to supply batteries to European automakers such as BMW and Volkswagen.
The industry predicts that the production capacity of Samsung SDI’s Hungarian battery plant will increase to about 45GWh. This is an estimate taking into account that 60 billion won is usually invested in 1GWh expansion. This is a scale that exceeds 40 gigawatts, the level initially expected by the industry. However, since the total investment includes debt repayment and operating funds for the Hungarian corporation, the scale of expansion itself is flexible. An official from Samsung SDI explained, “Investment in expansion to increase the production of batteries to be supplied to electric vehicle automakers in Europe.” An official in the battery industry said, “Europe has a policy to build and procure battery factories in the region, and the movement is accelerating.”
