It has been confirmed that Samsung Display’s OLED (Organic Light-Emitting Diode) display will be mounted on Hyundai Motor’s first dedicated electric vehicle’Ioniq 5′, which is about to be released in the first half of the year.
According to the automobile industry on the 28th, Hyundai Motor Company will receive an OLED display mounted on the side view camera system of the first electric vehicle’Ioniq 5’based on the electric vehicle platform’E-GMP’ from Samsung Display.
The side view camera, which can be selected as an option along with the standard side mirror in Ioniq 5, is a device that uses the camera and display screen to view the back and surroundings of the vehicle instead of the side mirror using a regular mirror. Compared to the side mirror, the field of view is wider, reducing blind spots and has the advantage of being able to see the surroundings brightly even in dark places like the rear camera.
Samsung Display has been supplying this system to the Audi electric vehicle’e-tron’ under the name’Virtual Side Mirror’ since 2018. OLED can provide an optimal visual solution to drivers due to its low power consumption and thin and light design characteristics.
The cooperation contract between Hyundai Motor Company and Samsung has been in the past 10 years. Earlier, since Samsung Display signed a contract to supply 8-inch LCDs for navigation in 2011 and supplied supplies for three years, there has been no case of collaboration between the two groups.
In the industry, starting with this case, analysis is emerging that the future cooperation relationship between the two groups will continue to expand. In May of last year, Chairman Eui-seon Eui visited Samsung SDI’s Cheonan Plant, and Jae-yong Lee directly guided Chairman Chung.
In particular, it is anticipated that the cooperation between the two groups will lead to strengthening of competitiveness, narrowing the gap with leading leaders such as Tesla of the United States and Toyota of Japan, ahead of the electric vehicle era.
Meanwhile, Hyundai Motor Company is planning to hold the world’s first public event of Ioniq 5, which is regarded as a key strategic model that will open a new era of electric vehicles, through online next month.
