Samsung Heavy Industries, which was on the rise with year-end relay orders, is cruising in the new year. After winning the order for the beast girl on the 5th of last month, it succeeded in winning the third additional order on the 4th. It is noteworthy whether the local economy, which had fallen into a recession due to the sluggish major industries, will also face a spring day.

On the 4th, Samsung Heavy Industries announced that it has signed contracts to build two 13,000 TEU-class large container ships with shipowners in Oceania. The total contract amount is 230 billion won. The ship will be built at Geoje Shipyard in Gyeongnam and will be delivered sequentially from the first quarter of 2023.

The ship that was ordered this time is an eco-friendly ship that will be equipped with a nitrogen oxide reduction system (SCR) and a ballast water treatment system (BWTS) in accordance with strengthened environmental regulations. Here, various energy saving devices and smart ship solution SVESSEL are installed.

Svessel is a system that supports economical and safe operation by integrating and managing all data related to ships with the latest ICT (information communication) technology based on a cloud data center. It is possible to maximize operational efficiency by providing optimal navigation (route) planning, real-time equipment status monitoring, fault diagnosis, and land remote control functions.

Including this contract, Samsung Heavy Industries is recording orders for a total of 5 vessels, including one LNG carrier and four container vessels, of $600 million this year. This is 8% of the $7.8 billion target this year.

The outlook is also bright. Clarkson Research, a UK shipbuilding and shipping market analysis company, predicted that this year’s new shipbuilding orders increased 24% year-on-year to 23.8 million CGT. In fact, around the end of last year, orders for high-value LNG carriers, the flagship ships of the three domestic shipbuilders, began to increase.

In addition, large-scale LNG projects, such as Mozambique Qatar, are expected to start in earnest this year. Through this, the industry expects to order at least 70 LNG carriers by the end of the year. Clarkson’s analysis is that the demand for eco-friendly ship replacements in line with the strengthening environmental regulations of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) will increase.

An official from Samsung Heavy Industries said, “Container ships are expected to lead the newbuilding market in the first half of this year due to improved shipping profitability due to the recovery of cargo volume and freight rate hikes.” I will do it.”
