Compared with existing LED chips and competitor mini LED chips
On the 3rd, Samsung Electronics unveiled a mini light-emitting diode (LED) chip applied to its’Neo QLED’ at the 2021 TV new product experience event held in the Samsung Seocho office building in Seoul. Neo QLED is a new mini LED TV lineup launched by Samsung Electronics this year to target the premium TV market.
On this day, Samsung Electronics exhibited an LED chip used in LCD panel TVs of general LED light sources, a competitor’s mini LED chip, and a mini LED chip that the company applied to this year’s Neo QLED new product. An official from Samsung Electronics announced that the company’s mini LED chip, which was unveiled at the venue, will be applied to 21 new Neo QLED models scheduled to be released this year.
The mini LED chip that Samsung Electronics exhibited as a competitor product on this day seems to be an early mini LED TV chip that was unveiled by China’s TCL in 2019. Currently, the size of the mini LED chip is in the range of 100 to 200 micrometers (㎛), and the supply chain is similar for each TV maker, such as Epistar and Playnightride in Taiwan.
Since the supply chain is the same, the chip size used for mini LED products that will compete in the premium TV market this year is likely to be similar. Samsung Electronics officially emphasizes that Neo QLED uses’Quantum Mini LED’ as a light source, which is about a quarter lower than existing products in terms of height.
Neo QLED realizes the industry’s highest quality picture quality with’Neo Quantum Matrix Technology’ and’Neo Quantum Processor’. At the event, Samsung Electronics compared its competitors’ organic light-emitting diode (OLED) TVs and its existing LED-LCD TVs and Neo QLEDs, highlighting that Neo QLED’s color expression and brightness are excellent.
When demonstrating a game or watching a TV program, the dark part of the competitor’s OLED product was not clear, but the dark part of the Samsung Neo QLED was easily distinguished. Compared to the existing company’s LCD TV, Neo QLED has excellent black expression. The company explained that it provides an optimal image by maximizing the contrast ratio by erasing unnecessary data through artificial intelligence (AI) analysis.
Meanwhile, on the same day, Samsung Electronics also unveiled a micro LED product, a next-generation display product. Micro LED is a self-luminous display that emits light and color by itself. Samsung Electronics exhibited 99-inch and 88-inch products on this day following the 110-inch home micro LED TV that was unveiled in December last year. The 110-inch micro LED TV costs 170 million won, and it still needs time to be commercialized.
