Amid a series of blackouts due to a record cold wave in the US, Samsung Electronics’ semiconductor plant in Austin, Texas, is also shut down due to a power supply interruption, resulting in unexpected operating losses.

According to industry sources on the 17th, Samsung Electronics’ semiconductor plant in Austin, Texas, has been shutting down since 1pm on the 16th (local time), and the plant has stopped operating. This is because the demand for electricity for heating has soared due to the cold wave.

An official from Samsung Electronics said, “The state of Austin requested a power cut on the 15th,” and “The timing of the restart has not been confirmed yet, and we are waiting for the city’s instructions or discussions.”

All semiconductor related companies such as Samsung Electronics, NXP, and Infineon have also been ordered to shut down. This is the first time that semiconductor companies have been asked to shut down due to a lack of local power.

The semiconductor process, which is an ultra-fine process, can cause damage of several billion won due to a temporary earthquake or power outage, so Samsung Electronics’ damage due to several days of shutdown is drawing attention. Earlier, in March 2018, Samsung Electronics suffered a power outage of about 30 minutes at its Pyeongtaek factory, causing damage of 50 billion won.

However, an official of Samsung Electronics said, “The amount of this loss will be different from the Pyeongtaek shutdown situation. It will decrease.”

He said, “There are many variables depending on the production capacity of the factory and the products produced, and it is still too early to calculate the size of the damage because it is different for each factory.”
