Samsung Electro-Mechanics announced on the 1st that it has succeeded in developing an optical 10x zoom folded camera module for the first time in the industry and is supplying it to global smartphone manufacturers.

Optical zoom refers to the function of taking a picture by pulling a distant subject closer without deteriorating the image quality. This can realize high magnification as the distance between the image sensor and the lens, that is, the focal length increases.

In 2019, Samsung Electro-Mechanics developed a folded camera module that secured a focal length by refracting light in the form of a periscope and succeeded in realizing 5x optical zoom for the first time.

However, when the optical zoom magnification is enlarged, the length of the camera module increases and the space efficiency in the smartphone decreases.

To solve this problem, Samsung Electro-Mechanics succeeded in developing a dual-folded camera module that refracts light twice to double the focal length and increases the camera module length by only 25%.

In addition, in order to reduce the height of the camera module, a unique lens that cuts the top and bottom of the lens was applied, and the loss that could occur during the refraction of light was minimized with a low-loss surface coating technology.

Furthermore, by applying a high-sensitivity sensor ball guide actuator, it is possible to obtain a clear picture with precise image stabilization even at a long lens operating distance.
