Samsung Display announced on the 3rd that it plans to release 10 types of OLED displays for notebooks to target the notebook market this year.

Samsung Display said, “After introducing new products with UHD resolution in 2019 and QHD and FHD in 2020, this year, we plan to meet consumers with a wide range of over 10 types by diversifying screen sizes and detailed specifications from 13.3 inches to 16 inches.” “In particular, after introducing the 13.3-inch FHD product for the first time at the end of last year, we will start producing 15.6-inch models with the same resolution from February, and plan to focus on the volume zone of the notebook market with more popular products.”

Samsung Display expects that this year’s notebook OLED sales will increase more than five times from last year due to the non-face-to-face and high-spec demand increase. Accordingly, it is planning to expand the OLED market for notebook computers by expanding customers.

Samsung Display’s small and medium-sized display division head (president) Kim Seong-cheol said, “With the influence of Corona 19, the demand for telecommuting, online classes, and gaming is rapidly increasing, and the IT market including laptops is energizing.” Just as we pushed the LCD with picture quality and dominated the smartphone market, we will expand our market share by offering innovative consumer value in the notebook market as well.”

Meanwhile, Samsung Display succeeded in developing the world’s first OLED for laptops with UHD resolution (3840×2160) in 2019, and began to enter the premium laptop market in earnest.

☞ Glossary of terms: Organic Light Emitting Diodes

Organic light-emitting diode refers to an organic compound-based light-emitting diode (LED) that emits light by itself when a voltage is applied. Unlike a liquid crystal display (LCD) that requires a backlight unit (BLU), which is a separate light emitting source, it emits light by itself to realize an image quality close to natural colors.

The color expressiveness meets 100% of the digital cinema color standard’DCI-P3′, and the black expressiveness can express even deep darkness of 0.0005 nits or less. The response speed and contrast ratio reach 0.1 to 0.2 milliseconds, which is 10 times better than LCD, and 1 million to 1. Because OLED is structurally simpler than LCD, it is easy to implement slim bezels and various designs. The panel is also thin and light, making it a display optimized for portable IT devices such as laptops, smartphones, and tablet PCs.
