Samsung Display (CEO Joo-sun Choi) announced on the 26th that it will introduce a new OLED for low-power smartphones in 2021.

Samsung Display succeeded in commercializing a new OLED organic material that significantly improved luminous efficiency compared to the previous work, and developed an OLED for smartphones that can reduce power consumption by more than 16%. This panel was first applied to the Galaxy S21 Ultra, which was recently unveiled by Samsung Electronics.

OLEDs express colors through organic light-emitting materials that emit light by themselves when current flows without a separate light source. Therefore, organic material efficiency greatly affects the display’s power consumption, wide color gamut, high brightness, HDR, and outdoor visibility.

The organic material newly developed by Samsung Display significantly increased the luminous efficiency by improving the movement speed of electrons faster and easier in the organic material layer. This means that it can emit brighter light with less energy. It can help improve the usage time of smartphones in the 5G era where video viewing is increasing. In addition, it is expected that the effect of increasing smartphone usage time by reducing the power consumption of the display can be expected.

Ji-ho Baek, head of small and medium-sized strategic marketing division, Samsung Display, said, “As display technologies such as large screens, high-speed driving, and high resolution continue to develop year by year, the demand for low-power technologies to effectively implement them is also growing. We will contribute to improving the performance of new products of our customers based on material technology.”
