Samsung Display’s smartphone organic light-emitting diode (OLED) panel sales in the first quarter of next year are expected to exceed $5 billion for the first time in the first quarter.

On the 30th, market research firm Omdia predicted that Samsung Display will generate sales of 5.18 billion dollars (about 5.6 trillion won) in smartphone OLED panels in the first quarter of next year. This is an increase of about 30% from $3,375 billion (about 4.33 trillion won) in the first quarter of last year.

Recently, the adoption of OLED panels is increasing due to the expansion of 5G smartphones. 5G smartphones have an increased number of mounted parts, and OLED panels with thinner panel thickness are more advantageous than existing liquid crystal display (LCD) panels. At the same time, in a 5G environment, content consumption such as video streaming increases, so OLEDs with good power efficiency are suitable. In the market, it is expected that about a third of the 1.4 billion smartphone shipments next year will be 5G smartphones.

At the same time, Apple’s strong sales of OLED iPhones are also expected to have a positive effect on Samsung Display. Sales of the iPhone 12 series this year, released later than usual, are exceeding expectations. Sales are expected to continue in 1Q12. All four of the iPhone 12 series applied OLED panels. Samsung Display has an 80% market share in OLED iPhones.

Earlier, Omdia expected 68.2% of OLED panel market share in the smartphone market in the fourth quarter. During the same period, the proportion of LCD panels was expected to be 31.8%. This is the first time that the proportion of LCD panels has fallen to 30%.
