Samsung Display gets approval to sell LCD factory in China

Samsung Display was approved by the government to sell its liquid crystal display (LCD) production line in Suzhou, China. Samsung Display is pursuing a business transition to a next-generation technology called quantum dot (QD) based display after clearing the LCD business, which is not profitable.

According to industry sources on the 5th, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy decided to approve the agenda of’Selling the LCD factory in Suzhou, China’ that Samsung Display applied for by holding the Industrial Technology Protection Committee the day before.

Earlier, in August of last year, Samsung Display signed a contract to sell its entire stake in the Suzhou LCD production line with CSOT, a subsidiary of China’s TCL Group, for $1.28 billion (about KRW 1.21 trillion). This is the only 8.5th generation LCD panel production line that Samsung Display owns in China. The problem was that the 8.5th generation LCD technology was a’national core technology’.

National core technology refers to industrial technology that has a high technical and economic value occupied in the domestic and international markets, and is likely to adversely affect the national security and national economy if it is leaked overseas. Accordingly, the government began reviewing Samsung Display’s application through a display field expert committee from the second half of last year and decided to finalize this month.

Following the approval of the sale, Samsung Display is expected to accelerate business transformation through the development of new QD-based technology. It is reported that Samsung Display will continue to operate the factory for the time being until the remaining administrative procedures are carried out.
