Samsung Display applied a new material set M11 to Samsung Electronics’ Galaxy S21 Ultra, which improved the electronic movement speed of organic light-emitting diode (OLED) panels.

On the 26th, Samsung Display announced that it applied a low-power OLED panel that reduced power consumption by 16% to Samsung Electronics’ Galaxy S21 Ultra, which was unveiled this month. Samsung Display explained that it has succeeded in commercializing a new OLED organic material with improved luminous efficiency compared to the previous one. Galaxy S21 Ultra is the first to apply a new organic material.

The new organic material that Samsung Display announced this time seems to refer to M11. In the industry, it is expected that Samsung Display will first apply M11, a new OLED material combination, to this year’s Galaxy S21 series and use it in the Apple iPhone 13 series, which will be released in the second half of this year.

It seems that Samsung Electronics applied M11 only to the Galaxy S21 Ultra, the top model among the Galaxy S21 series this year, and the existing M10 material combination for the rest of the Galaxy S21 general and Plus models.

OLED expresses color as an organic light emitting material that emits light by itself when current flows without a separate light source. Organic material efficiency affects display power consumption, wide color gamut, high luminance, high dynamic range (HDR) and outdoor visibility.

Samsung Display explained that the newly developed organic material significantly increased the luminous efficiency by improving the electron transfer speed of the organic material layer. With less energy, you can emit a brighter light. Reducing display power consumption increases smartphone usage time. Recently, content consumption such as video streaming has increased in 5G environments.

Samsung Display announced that it has been cooperating with global materials companies for the past 10 years to secure a super-divided competitiveness in organic materials technology and is concentrating its capabilities in enhancing material technology. In the past three years, the company has applied (applied) more than 370 OLED organic material patents every year in Korea, the United States, China, Japan, and Europe. As of last year, there were 5,000 patents related to organic materials that Samsung Display secured.

Ji-ho Baek, vice president of small and medium-sized strategic marketing at Samsung Display, said, “Display technologies such as large screens, high-speed driving, and high resolution have evolved year by year, and the demand for low-power technologies to effectively implement them has grown.” Said.
