Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics have begun a’number fight’ over the newly launched mini light-emitting diode (LED) TV in the TV market this year.

Mini LED is a technology that has attracted attention as a next-generation light source. The chip size is 100-200 micrometers (㎛·0.001 ㎜), which is smaller than the general LED chip (300 ㎛). The smaller the chip, the more chips used as a light source (backlight unit/BLU) can be mounted, and the contrast ratio can naturally be increased.

As LG Electronics first unveiled the mini LED TV, the battle for leadership began. On the 29th of last month, the premium liquid crystal display (LCD) TV’QNED’ TV was unveiled through an online technology briefing. Mini LED TV is a method of using a backlight material as a mini LED in existing LCD TVs. Strictly speaking, it is classified as an LCD TV. LG Electronics introduced QNED TV with the modifier’the peak of LCD TV evolution’ at the briefing session.

At the briefing session, LG Electronics introduced its products using various figures. According to LG Electronics, about 30,000 mini LED devices will be installed in the 86-inch 8K resolution QNED TV to be released this year. It was introduced that the mini LED is less than a tenth of the size of the LED device in the existing LCD TV. It is expressed that there are about 2,500 areas for local dimming (local dimming).

Samsung Electronics presented two figures that LG Electronics did not present. On the 7th, Samsung Electronics unveiled the’Neo QLED’ TV through the First Look 2021 event. It is a product that uses mini LED as a backlight. In the introduction video, he expressed that “‘Quantum Mini LED’ was applied to Neo QLED TV.” Quantum mini LED also added a comparison of’one 40th level’ compared to existing LEDs when compared by height.

In addition, a figure that the brightness of the quantum mini LED can be finely adjusted up to 12 bits (4096 steps) has also been released. Both ‘1 in 40’ and ‘4096 steps’ were figures for items that LG Electronics did not present. In the end, it is impossible to directly compare which is better because the two companies only release different numbers.

An official from Samsung Electronics said, “Neo QLED TV new products are scheduled to be released around March, and only by that point will the detailed figures for each product size be disclosed.”

The industry predicts that as mini LED TVs will be released in earnest this year, the competition between companies will intensify in the future. An industry insider said, “From this year, the spring and autumn national era of mini LED TVs will be opened,” he said. “The numbers presented by each company are only to highlight the advantages of the company, and international standards are not set.”

He added, “For mini LED TVs based on LCD technology, the amount of capital and facilities previously invested by Chinese companies is significant, so fierce competition will continue for at least three years.”

Display academia sees that in the end, precise technology using mini LEDs is more important than numbers. Academia officials explained, “What is important in mini LEDs is how much thinner mini LED devices are put in the local dimming area to make black more black than existing LCDs. Contrast ratio and color reproduction technology are important.”
