Whether Samsung’s legal response to QNED is still undecided
Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics are fighting over the TV name. LG Electronics announced on the 29th that the new mini LED TV was named’QNED’ at an online technology briefing. It is pointed out that QNED is a sub-product of the company’s top TV, OLED, and this name is intended to contain Samsung Electronics, who is struggling with the use of QNED as a next-generation TV name.
Both companies have been non-discharging even when they named QLED and AMOLED in the past. In the case of QLED, LG Electronics dropped a report from the Fair Trade Commission and did not go to court. However, in the case of AMOLED, the dispute between the two companies was ended when the Korean Intellectual Property Office refused to register Samsung Electronics’ trademark’AMOLED’. At the time, LG Electronics argued that it was a problem for Samsung Electronics to register’AMOLED’ as a trademark in Korean-style reading of active organic light-emitting diodes (AMOLED).
In the electronics industry, there is a high possibility that Samsung Electronics will use the QNED name in the future, so there is also a prospect that it can take legal action against LG Electronics. Samsung Electronics has not yet made an official position.
LG QNED is a brand name that combines’Q’ from Quantum dot and’N’ from Nanocell. The concept is different from the abbreviation QNED for’Quantum nano-emitting diode’ that Samsung Display is developing. QNED uses nano-inorganic materials to complement the shortcomings of OLED or QD displays that use organic materials. The electronics industry predicts that Samsung Electronics’ next-generation TV will be QNED, following mini LED.
In September, LG Electronics applied for the trademark right of QNED to the Korean Intellectual Property Office and applied for the same trademark right in the US, Europe, and Australia. On the 2nd, LG, a holding company, applied for a trademark of’LG QNED’ to the European Patent Office.
Samsung Electronics also applied for a trademark titled’Samsung QNED’ in Korea in October. The trademark rights applied by each company are currently in the process of examination.
The electronics industry believes that LG Electronics named the mini LED TV as QNED to deliberately check Samsung Electronics. QNED TV was introduced as the peak of LCD evolution, but in the end, it was evaluated by the technology below rather than OLED.
An electronics industry official said, “LG Electronics’ mini-LED TV naming implies that no matter how advanced LCD-based TVs may develop, it does not reach its OLED technology. I’m in position,” he analyzed.
It is known that Samsung Electronics is also reviewing responses to LG Electronics’ use of the QNED name. It is that consumers may misunderstand the technical concept of QNED. It is the same logic that LG Electronics reported to the FTC in the past.
Earlier in September 2019, LG Electronics reported that Samsung Electronics’ QLED is an act of misleading consumers, far from the original meaning of a quantum dot light emitting diode (QLED) that emits light by itself. .
An official in the electronics industry said, “There are many consumers who are already confused about the concept of OLED and QLED, but it seems irrational that LG Electronics used the name QNED for LCD TVs.”
