Ryu Hyun-jin (34, Toronto Blue Jays) was recognized as a pitcher of eight colors.

MLB.com’s Matt Kelly introduced pitchers who effectively use various pitches through Run Value on the 9th (Korean time). The scored value is a statistical record of how much runs were reduced through the pitch. There were three or more pitches with a score of -5 or less, each pitch exceeding 10%, and two-thirds of the regular innings (40 innings) or more were selected, with only nine.

Hyunjin Ryu and Jacob DeGrom (New York Mets), Jack Grainke (Houston Astros), Jack Flaherty (St. Louis Cardinals), Shane Bieber (Cleveland Indians), Sony Gray (Cincinnati Reds), Jack Gallon (Arizona Diamondbacks), Dallas Kai Kle (Chicago White Sox) and Max Fried (Atlanta Braves).

In the case of Ryu Hyun-jin, the changeup was the best at -30, the cut fastball (cutter) was -10 and the curve was -7. Hyunjin Ryu joined Hanwha Eagles in 2006 and received changeup from Daesung Koo. Even after coming to the United States, it is Ryu Hyun-jin’s flagship weapon. Kelly explained, “Ryu Hyun-jin’s changeup is the sixth most valuable pitch in the major leagues since 2019.”

With the advice of coach Rick Honeycutt during the LA Dodgers, the cutter is now an indispensable tool. The curves and sliders are also classy. Kelly said, “Ryu Hyun-jin has 5 pitches with a pitch rate of 10% or more in 2019 and 2020. Among them, sinkers are the only balls that fall short of the average pitch value. Sinkers are also slightly below average.”

Kelly said, “Ryu Hyun-jin can throw all pitches into four strike zones. He is proving that he can effectively pitch if he throws several pitches elaborately (even if he is not fast).”
