[이데일리 스타in 임정우 기자] Wayne Rooney, 36, took over as the official coach of Derby County and began his career as a leader.
Derby County announced on the website on the 16th (KST) that “I chose Rooney as the new manager,” and that “Director Rooney will lead the team for two years and six months until June 2023.”
After playing for Everton and Manchester United (Man United), Rooney moved to the U.S. in 2018 and played two seasons at DC United before returning to the British stage when he moved to Derby County in the English Championship (second division) in August 2019.
Rooney is a’Man U Legend’ who played 559 games and scored 253 goals during 13 seasons for Manchester United. The England national team also competed in 120 A-match matches, scoring 53 goals and scoring the most goals of the English national team.
Rooney, who wore a Derby County uniform and worked as a’playing coach’, took over as a’temporary command tower’ and commanded the team when coach Philip Coqui was hardened by poor performance in November last year. Rooney led the team as an acting manager and achieved 3 wins, 4 draws and 2 losses in 9 regular league games, and was finally appointed as the official command tower after being trusted by the club.
Rooney was elected as the official command tower of Derby County, ending his active career in 19 years after debuting on the first team stage at Everton in August 2002. “I was deeply impressed with the potential of Derby County when I first returned to England,” said Rooney. “I will do everything I can to unlock the potential of the team I’ve been watching over the past 12 months.”
