Respiratory Patient Reduction in Corona… 80% fewer flu hospitalizations

Research results show that the hospitalization rate for respiratory diseases has decreased by following the rules of life prevention, such as wearing personal masks, washing hands, and keeping social distances for more than a year during the epidemic of the novel coronavirus infection (Corona 19). Research results show that the hospitalization rate for respiratory diseases has decreased by following the rules of life prevention, such as wearing personal masks, washing hands, and keeping social distances for more than a year during the epidemic of the novel coronavirus infection (Corona 19). In particular, the number of hospitalized patients due to the flu was analyzed to have decreased by 80% compared to before the Corona 19 epidemic.

The joint research team of Professor Heo Gyeong-min of the Department of Infectious Medicine at Samsung Medical Center (Jeong Jae-hoon, professor of preventive medicine at Gachon Medical University, Gil Hospital, Kim Young-eun, Ph. It was revealed that the hospitalization rate for major respiratory diseases has been lower than before the Corona 19 epidemic after life protection such as wearing, coughing etiquette, and hand washing were implemented.

The research team used the National Health Insurance claim data to assess hospitalization rates for four major respiratory diseases, including pneumonia, flu, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and asthma, from 2016 to 2019, before the corona 19 epidemic, and the corona 19 epidemic in Korea. This was a comparative analysis of hospitalization rates from February to July of last year, which took off in earnest. As a result, hospitalization for four major respiratory diseases during the period of quarantine measures was significantly reduced compared to before the corona19 epidemic.

Hospitalization due to pneumonia in February-July last year was 1872.59 per 1 million people, 53% less than 3965.29 per 1 million people, the average of the same period of the four years before the Corona 19 epidemic, and hospitalizations due to the flu also decreased by 80%. Hospitalization due to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease was 435.11 per 1 million people on average in the four years before the corona19 epidemic, but in the same period last year, it decreased by 42% to 251.70, and hospitalization due to asthma was 52% from 353.16 per 1 million people to 168.13 people per 1 million people. Since February of last year, after the outbreak of Corona 19, the Korean people have kept social distancing and have adhered to life quarantine rules such as wearing masks and washing hands. According to the ‘2020 Community Health Survey Results’ released by the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on the 1st, the rate of wearing masks in indoor facilities used by an unspecified number of people was 99.6%, and the rate of wearing masks outdoors where it is difficult to distance was 99.5%.

The percentage of practicing hand washing after going out rose 12.1 percentage points from 85.5% in 2019 to 97.6% last year, and the use of soap and hand sanitizers also rose 11.9 percentage points from 81.3% to 93.2%.

Prof. Gyeong-min Heo, who conducted the study, said, “The causal relationship is not known for sure, but life-fighting measures to respond to COVID-19 have lowered the frequency of other respiratory infections. “Even after the end of Corona 19, we need to further study effective methods that can be practiced in daily life in order to prevent the case of hospitalization of chronic respiratory disease patients due to worsening of the underlying disease.”

The results of this study were published in the latest issue of’Thorax’, a renowned academic journal on respiratory diseases.
