An event in memory of Sergeant Byun Hee-soo was held on the 27th ahead of the’International Transgender Visibility Day’ on the 31st.
A joint action committee for the reinstatement of Sergeant Byun and the restoration of his honor (the Air Force Committee) held a placard that reads “Transgender is by your side-remembering Sergeant Byun Hee-soo” at Seoul Subway Line 2 and the square in front of Seoul City Hall Held an interview.
About 100 citizens attended the event that started at City Hall Station around 1:30 pm on that day. This joint action began at City Hall Station, followed by a round of subway line 2, and then returning to City Hall to hold a press conference.
They wore ribbons and badges that symbolize LGBTQ people, and after dividing the number of people one by one on the subway, they went around Line 2 for about an hour and a half. Some participants hung or unfolded small flags and rainbow tents in the train compartment. Some of the participants also sat down to read books on transgender and sexual minorities.
One participant said, “We participated in order to mourn Sergeant Byun’s death and to inform the reality of transgender people who exist but are not recognized and are treated as non-existent people.”
There were no other conflicts with the citizens, but some of the participants said, “There was a complaint that it was uncomfortable to see,” and had a staggering with the subway sheriff asking for the removal of the tent.
Participants who returned to the city hall station gathered at the Seoul City Hall Square with umbrellas colored as a symbol of transgender people handed out by the organizers. They shouted, “Remembering Sergeant Byun Hee-soo, transgender people are with us.”
The Air Force Commission held a press conference at 3:31 pm to commemorate the Transgender Visualization Day (March 31).
“Our society is forcing transgender people to hide somewhere invisible,” the Air Commission said. “We will overcome hate and discrimination like rain and win a world where transgender people can live safely.”
