Government, regular meetings with 133 engineering colleges…

The government decided to meet regularly with 130 engineering colleges nationwide to strengthen cooperation in areas such as fostering engineering talent.

On the afternoon of the 24th, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy held an inauguration ceremony for the’Ministry of Industry-Technology Dean’s Regular Council’ at Lotte Hotel in Seoul.

The College of Engineering Deans’ Council is a regular communication window between the Korea Institute of Technology Dean’s Council and the Ministry of Industry, a meeting of 133 engineering college presidents representing national engineering colleges.

It was prepared to discover innovation engines that will lead new industries based on the voices of the field and to seek mid- to long-term cooperation plans.

At the conference that day, the government announced that it would strive to foster demand-based engineering talent while expanding the university cooperation project, which is currently worth 570 billion won.

First of all, in order to promote autonomy and creativity of the university, support for the research institute of engineering colleges with excellent competency will be increased in units of’research institute’ rather than’task’.

Currently, the scale of the’Industrial Technology Hub Center Promotion Demonstration Project’, which is currently being operated for three engineering research institutes, including Sungkyunkwan University, Yonsei University, and Hanyang University, is increased from 2.6 billion won last year to 5.45 billion won this year, and plans to expand further in the future.

In addition, in order to promote the commercialization of technology and create a stable research environment, the’University Innovation Center (UIC) Project’, which builds research equipment and test beds for universities, will be newly established for 10 billion won.

Companies will be provided with opportunities to utilize the excellent source technology possessed by the university and to verify the performance of commercialization, and to manpower at the master’s and doctorate level in the lab, the opportunity to operate equipment with high corporate demands.

In addition, a method of utilizing a talent network in which a professor of science and engineering conducts technology consulting and joint research and development (R&D) for small and medium-sized companies using the research years will be prepared.

It is also planning to strengthen the university-company consortium of the existing manpower training project.

Industry Minister Sung Yun-mo said, “Technological innovation that begins in the laboratory of the College of Engineering is the seed of change that drives our economy and industry. We will actively respond to the challenges facing carbon neutrality and digital transformation through close communication with the College of Engineering.”
