[아시아경제 김희윤 기자] Etna, the largest volcano in Europe, on the island of Sicily, Italy, began erupting.

According to ANSA news agency on the 17th (local time), from 4 p.m. on the previous day, lava flowed into the sky with dark red smoke columns from the snow-covered crater of Mount Etna, and volcanic ash poured down like rain.

Lava flows down the side of the mountain from an eruption that lasted more than an hour. Fortunately, local media reported that there was no damage to the villages near the volcano.

Catania International Airport near the volcano was also closed for some time. The airport resumed operation from 9 am on the 17th after working overnight.

Mount Etna is the highest active volcano in Europe at 3350 meters above sea level. Due to frequent eruptions in recent years, there is a growing concern about casualties and disasters. Since a large-scale eruption in early 2009, lava eruptions have been repeated until last January.
