Fourteen four-year universities in Busan are recruiting 4,626 additional students this year. This is a scale that is close to half of the number of people carried over on-time and occasional this year, and is almost four times more than last year’s additional recruitment. In local university districts, which were concerned about the impact of the declining school-age population, there is a prevailing atmosphere that “there is finally coming”. A warning is issued that the local universities, as well as the government, local governments, and education offices, will face the worst situation this spring unless they come up with special measures.

14 4-year universities excluding Busan National University of Education

41% more on-time staff

A whopping 3.7 times increase compared to the previous year

There are no students to fill due to the declining school-age population

The’worst’ inevitable due to the massive shortfall

According to the University Education Council on the 22nd, from this day to the 27th, 162 four-year colleges nationwide will be recruiting additionally. The number of additional recruits nationwide this year was 26,129, an increase of 2.6 times from 9830 last year. Universities usually carry over the number of people who could not be filled in the regular recruitment on time, and if they are not able to fill there, they recruit additional people.

The situation in Busan is much more serious. Excluding Pusan National University of Education, the number of additional recruits at 14 four-year universities in Busan was 4626, a whopping 3.7 times higher than the previous year (1,266), which was a’previous scale’. This is 40.8% of the 11,340 regular recruitment personnel (within the garden), including the number of people who are carried over from time to time in Busan this year.

Dongmyeong University (804) is the university that selects the largest number of students in this additional recruitment. Compared to last year, Dongmyeong University recorded the largest increase in recruitment number of 645. Subsequently, Silla University (746), Youngsan University (548), and Dongseo University (535) were in the order of recruitment. Universities with an additional recruitment of 100 or less are Korea Maritime University (52), Dong-A University (61), Kyungsung University (64), Pukyong National University (79), and Pusan National University (90). The same is true.

The problem is that even if colleges are recruiting more, few students can fill in the vacancy. In particular, only 27,000 students, including students who took the 2021 SAT, are in Busan. For this reason, it is expected that a large-scale shortage of each local university in this year’s entrance exam is inevitable. Concerns over the decline in the school-age population that’cherry blossoms will perish in order of blooming’ are becoming reality. It is pointed out that in order for local universities to live, universities must adjust their quotas and specialize in adapting to the era of declining school-age population, and that the government should turn the financial aid concentrated on universities in the metropolitan area to non-capital areas.

There is also an order that the Office of Education should actively educate the advantages of going to a local university in the field of secondary education. First of all, ensuring that local college graduates get quality jobs is essential not only for college but also for the community. Vice-Chancellor Chae Young-hee of Pukyong National University said, “If we aim to become a’mega city’ that integrates Busan, Ulsan, and Gyeongnam, it is necessary to at least remove the restrictions on employment in public institutions in Booulkyung.” Reporter Hwang Seok-ha [email protected]
