[아이뉴스24 김문기 기자] Qualcomm unveiled the 4th generation Snapdragon Automotive platform. Digital innovation for the next generation of cars is expected to accelerate.
On the 27th, Qualcomm held a non-face-to-face event of’Redefining Automotive: Technology Showcase’ and unveiled the ‘4th generation Qualcomm Snapdragon Automotive Cockpit Platform’, a next-generation digital cockpit solution.

The automotive digital cockpit is evolving into a domain electric (E/E) computing architecture based on the complexity, cost, and demands of central computing consolidation. The fourth-generation Snapdragon Automotive Platform is designed as a homogeneous, versatile solution to help transition to this domain architecture.
It acts as a central hub for high-performance computing, computer vision, artificial intelligence (AI) and multi-sensor processing, and is configured with flexible software (SW) to meet the computing, performance and functional safety requirements for the domain and domain.
Nakul Dugal, senior vice president and general manager of Qualcomm Technology, said, “The digital cockpit is a technology that meets the ever-increasing demand of the automobile manufacturing industry to provide customers with a unique and differentiated brand experience,” said “Qualcomm’s 4th generation Snapdragon Automotive. “We will provide the industry’s most advanced digital in-vehicle solution with the goal of reinventing the entertainment and context-aware experience for drivers and passengers through the platform.”
The new digital cockpit platform is highly scalable and supports high-end and high-end platforms such as’Performance, Premier, and Paramount’.
It is produced based on 5 nanometer (nm) process technology. It is installed in the next generation cockpit with low power and thermal control performance. It is provided to automobile manufacturers with a system-on-chip (SoC).
The 4th generation Snapdragon Automotive Digital Cockpit platform has a 6th generation Qualcomm Kryo CPU, a Qualcomm Hexagon processor, a multi-core Qualcomm AI engine, a 6th generation Qualcomm Adreno GPU, and a Qualcomm Spectra Image Signal Processor (ISP).
Qualcomm’s car-to-cloud service includes a soft SKU function and notifies users of the latest functions and performances through over-the-air updates (OTA) according to the life cycle after vehicle deployment.
The new digital cockpit platform is designed to provide a number of real-time advanced operating systems in hypervisor and container software configurations through software scalability and flexibility. It supports multiple engine control units (ECUs) and domain integration including cluster, cockpit, augmented reality heads-up display (AR-HUD), infotainment, rear seat display, electronic mirror, and other in-vehicle monitoring services. It is also equipped with image processing technology that encompasses driving recording and monitoring functions.
The new digital cockpit platform aims to start production (SOP) in 2022. A wide range of automotive industry companies can evaluate, demonstrate and develop solutions through the ‘4th Gen Qualcomm Snapdragon Automotive Development Platform’, which is scheduled to be available in the second quarter of this year.
The integrated automotive platform covered all fields such as telematics, infotainment, and in-vehicle connectivity, with orders over $8 billion (approximately 8 trillion won). Of the 25 global automakers, 20 companies have won infotainment and digital cockpit businesses.

◆ Accelerating 5G momentum for connected vehicles based on wireless platforms
Qualcomm will use the Snapdragon Automotive 4G and 5G platform to help automakers meet the growing demand for a stable premium driving environment based on 4G LTE and 5G connected services.
Snapdragon Automotive 4G and 5G platforms use integrated cellular technology-based vehicle-to-object communication (C-V2X), Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and precise location-based technology to connect to the vehicle-to-cloud, vehicle-to-vehicle, and surrounding environments, while at the same time connecting to a high-end in-vehicle driving environment. , Connected car service, and is designed to support greater stability and autonomy.
Qualcomm said, “As the number one semiconductor supplier in the field of telematics and wireless vehicle connectivity, we have been supplying technology solutions for the automotive industry for over 15 years,” said Qualcomm. “Currently, the majority of global car manufacturers are telematics, infotainment, connectivity and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). ), including Qualcomm’s portfolio of automotive solutions.”
The industry predicts that the proportion of all vehicles sold with built-in cellular communication will account for about three-quarters by 2027, compared to 20% in 2015.
Jong-seon Park, Managing Director of LG Electronics, said, “LG and Qualcomm are mobile innovation leaders, focusing on the 5G automotive platform sector and applying their R&D experience accumulated over decades in the automotive industry.” We believe that based on our long-term cooperation, we have been able to build a complete 5G connected car platform.”
Meanwhile, Qualcomm entered the automotive business in the early 2000s, and Qualcomm Technology was one of the first companies to provide 4G LTE solutions to connected cars in 2013. More than 150 million vehicles are currently using Qualcomm Automotive Wireless solutions.
“Qualcomm Technologies, as a leading innovation company, has kept its promise to improve vehicle safety and autonomy while designing 4G and 5G platforms that realize the potential of connected transport as well as advanced infotainment and telematics systems,” said Nakul Dugal. I was confident.
