Putin signs amendment to the election law’possible long-term power by 2036

Russian President Vladimir Putin has finally signed a bill allowing him to serve two more presidency.

According to the Tas news agency, President Putin signed a bill to reorganize the election and referendum-related laws on the 5th local time in line with the constitutional provisions revised last year.

The bill was signed by the President and published on the legal information disclosure site.

The new presidential election law stipulates that “Russians who have served two presidency or who hold the second term of office as of the date of the election are not eligible to run.”

The same person was forbidden to hold the presidency more than three times.

However, at the same time, the new presidential election law stipulates that the existing presidency held by a specific person before the time the amendment adopted last year came into effect is not counted.

Russia adopted a constitutional amendment through a referendum in July last year that would allow President Putin, who is in power in the fourth term, to continue in office for a long time until 2036.

The revised constitution contained a special provision that “blanked” Putin’s existing terms of office so that he could re-run for presidential election in 2024.

With the amendment of the constitution and related election laws, President Putin will be able to re-run for the 5th presidential election in 2024 when he turns 72 and hold two more six-year terms until 2036, when he turns 84.

Even if he subtracted the four-year tenure as Prime Minister, he was able to stay in power in the Kremlin for more than 30 years after he came to power in 2000.

President Putin said in a media interview in his country last June, before the amendment, that he is not excluding the possibility of re-running for the 2024 presidential election if the amendment is confirmed.
