In Moscow, from 2pm on that day, Navalni supporters gathered at Pushkin Square in downtown and shouted slogans such as “Free Navalni” and “Putin is a thief.” As crowds gathered in the square, the police said, “The event is illegal. We are working hard to keep safety,” he explained, but the size of the protesters grew. When some supporters tried to head to the Matrosskaya Tishina concentration camp, where Navalni was imprisoned, Russian authorities mobilized police and internal forces to suppress and arrest them.

Russian human rights monitoring organization OVD-info announced that more than 2,700 people were arrested all over Russia, including about 900 arrested in Moscow. Russian authorities did not disclose the size of the detained personnel. On this day, Navalni’s wife, Yulia Navalni, was also arrested, arrested, and soon released. Yulia posted a photo taken at the protest site on Instagram and said, “I am happy that you are here. Thank you.”

The protests are the largest since the protests against the amendment of the pension law in 2018 when the Russian government delayed the pension age. Navalni has announced that it will hold a large-scale demonstration again on the 30th-31st.

The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs criticized the U.S. embassy in Moscow for promoting protests, such as announcing the meeting place and time. Foreign Ministry spokesman Mariya Zaharova warned, “This is consistent with Washington’s inflammatory provocative tactics to provoke protests in the country’s unfavorable government.” The Washington Post (WP) assessed that “the protests could be an early diplomatic task defining the relationship between the Biden administration and Putin.” The US State Department in a statement called for “immediate and unconditional release of Navalni.”
