[에너지경제신문 여헌우 기자] Korea’s automobile production recaptured the world’s fifth place in five years. In 2019, it was pushed to India and Mexico, ranking 7th, but last year, the rank rose by two ranks due to the fact that the factory utilization rate in the corona19 pendemic did not drop significantly.

According to a survey by the Korea Automobile Industry Association (KAMA) on the 8th,’The Current Status of the Top 10 Automobile Production in 2020′, Korea regained its position in 5th place after 5 years after ranking 5th in India in 2016.

Korea produced 3.56848 cars last year. This is a decrease of 11.2% from the previous year (395,615 units). However, it is evaluated that it is relatively good in the situation where global automobile production decreased by 15.5% due to the aftermath of Corona 19.

In fact, KAMA explained that the recapture of fifth place last year was due to production disruptions in India and Mexico. India, which was 5th in 2019, and Mexico, which was 6th, fell by 24.9% and 21.2%, respectively.

Production in all of the first to fourth-largest producers decreased, but the ranking remained unchanged. China, the first place, fell by 2%, while the United States (-19%), the third place (-16.7%), and Germany (-24.7%), the fourth place, saw a larger decline. Spain and Brazil fell 19.6% and 31.6%, respectively, to 8th and 9th. Russia entered the top 10 for the first time since 2000, and France, which was ranked 10th in 2019, fell to 13th after Thailand (11th) and Canada (12th).

As for the share of the total automobile production, China rose 4.4 percentage points to 32.2%, and Korea rose 0.2 percentage points to 4.5%.
