A team dedicated to the preparatory work related to the wind power generation project will be established by the Ministry of Environment.

The Ministry of Environment announced on the 22nd that it will launch the’Wind Power Environmental Assessment Team’ and will be in charge of environmental impact assessment related to the onshore and offshore wind power projects. An official from the Ministry of Environment explained, “We will review environmental problems arising in the development process, come up with solutions, and provide consulting services throughout the entire process.”

Unlike the previous decision on whether to proceed with the project based on the possibility of environmental damage, etc., the government plans to conduct a natural environment survey led by the ministries from the stage before location discovery, and to come up with immediate improvement measures with the business operator in case of problems. The policy is to actively endeavor at the level of ministries for offshore wind power projects.

“Renewable energy is an important policy tool for carbon neutrality,” said Kim Eun-gyeong, head of the Department of Land and Environment Policy. “We created a dedicated team with the intention of proactively checking aspects such as location and environmental concerns before making a business decision.” .

Team Leader Han-Chang Choi, who oversees the new team, said, “We will try to make the environmental impact assessment consultation, which was recognized only as a regulation, be recognized as a diagnostic service in the entire process.” The dedicated team plans to hold the first briefing session for offshore wind power operators in Seoul on the afternoon of the 26th.
