President Moon visited Wonju Station on the 4th and took a test ride on the KTX-Ieum (EMU-260), a low-carbon, eco-friendly high-speed train, which was set to operate the first officially the next day.

KTX-Ieum is a low-carbon train that emits 70% of carbon dioxide as compared to conventional trains.

In the section of the Wonju-Jecheon double-track train, which will be opened this time, a fourth-generation railway wireless communication network based on LTE, LTE-R, was installed to digitize the social infrastructure (SOC).
LTE-R enables multi-party video and voice calls by adding radio functions to LTE terminal functions. It can cope with emergency situations by real-time linking with the control room, trains leading and following, and related organizations.
In addition, it is possible to quickly exchange accident risk information such as train location and rockfall between the train and the control center, transfer command power to the disaster safety net in case of an emergency, and command on-site, and provide train access to facility management and maintenance personnel. It is an advanced system that combines Korea’s excellent IT technology with railroad safety such as warning.
While Europe and others still use second-generation communication networks that can only transmit voice and simple text, Korea can transmit information at high speed and large capacity (75Mbps) through LTE-R, which applies a system developed with 100% domestic technology.
The Railroad Corporation will establish a smart railroad operation system by constructing a corresponding system on all railroad routes by 2025.
