The hydrogen electric vehicle’Nexo’, which President Moon Jae-in appeared at Hyundai Motor’s Ulsan plant on the 30th, is leading the global hydrogen car market by surpassing 10,000 cumulative sales in a single country for the first time in the world.
The Nexo is Hyundai Motor’s second-generation hydrogen electric vehicle and is used by Prime Minister Lee Nak-yeon as well as Hyundai Motor Group Chairman Eui-seon Eui-seon.
President Moon, who appeared on the Nexo on this day, said, “Hyundai Motor has written a new history,” and said, “Today, the world’s first hydrogen car sales exceeded 10,000 units and electric commercial vehicle sales also exceeded 10,000 units.”
According to Hyundai Motor Company, Nexo recorded 10,000 cumulative sales in two years and seven months after its launch in Korea in March 2018. Nexo is the first in the world that a single hydrogen car model has surpassed 10,000 cumulative sales in a single country.
The Nexo, which sold 727 units in 2018, has 4194 units in 2019 and 5079 units as of the end of October this year, and the sales are accelerating as time goes by. This popularity is evaluated that the government’s policy of supplying hydrogen electric vehicles was also of great help.
The Nexo, which sold 4987 units in the global market last year, also ranked first in the global hydrogen electric vehicle market. This year, it is cruising with 10,000 units sold until last July.
The Nexo is evaluated as the ultimate eco-friendly car in which the future technology of Hyundai Motors is concentrated. Based on the next-generation power hydrogen fuel cell system, it is a futuristic SUV equipped with a large number of cutting-edge convenience technologies. The driving distance per charge is 609km, the highest output and maximum torque are 154 horsepower and 40.3kg·m respectively. do.
In particular, for the past two years, it has been recognized for its excellent product quality through various organizations and media, and has been known as the next-generation future car.
In 2018, it was the first hydrogen car in the world to receive five stars, the highest rating in the European New Vehicle Safety Assessment Program (Euro NCAP), and in the same year, it was also selected as one of the world’s top 10 engines selected by the US automotive media outlet Word Auto.
It has won the world-renowned Red Dot Design Award and IDEA Design Award one after another in 2018, and in July this year, it was well received as a “very outstanding car” by Automoto Unt Sport, Germany’s leading automobile magazine.
Hyundai said, “Nexo’s sales of 10,000 units in a single market can be seen as a sign of popularization of hydrogen electric vehicles,” and predicted that “the hydrogen vehicle ecosystem will be built in earnest.”
At the ‘1st 2020 Hydrogen Mobility + Show’, which opened in July, the executive vice chairman of Hyundai Motor Group Eui-sun Eui-sun at the time announced that he plans to unveil a new hydrogen electric vehicle in 3-4 years.
The government is also spurring the expansion of the supply of hydrogen cars. First, 80 hydrogen charging stations will be built in the metropolitan area by 2022 to expand infrastructure. It plans to build 53 units, including 13 units in Seoul, next year. In order to expand the supply of hydrogen trucks, a new subsidy of 20 million won will be established. From next year, it is a principle to replace vehicles with electric vehicles or hydrogen vehicles when replacing public vehicles, and six local governments, including Seoul, plan to purchase 1,200 commercial hydrogen vehicles by 2040. It also planned to export 70,000 hydrogen cars in 2025.
