EU Member States Moder or Vaccination Preparation… Start shipping next week
EU secures 160 million doses… First quantity is expected to be small
(Brussels = Yonhap News) Correspondent Kim Jong-un = As the European Union (EU) executive committee approved the use of a novel coronavirus infection (Corona 19) vaccine developed by the US pharmaceutical company Modena, the vaccine is expected to be supplied to member countries next week. do.
According to the European version of the US political media Politico and Reuters news agency on the 7th (local time), Modena announced in a statement the previous day that it would start delivering vaccines to EU member states next week.
The EU Commission previously officially approved the use of this vaccine in EU member states on the same day, following the recommendation of the European Medicines Agency (EMA) to approve the modal or conditional marketing of the vaccine.
This is the second vaccine that has been approved for use in the EU following the COVID-19 vaccine jointly developed by US pharmaceutical company Pfizer and German Bioentech.
The EU Commission has already secured 160 million doses of vaccine for use by 27 member states through a contract with Modena.
The approval came amid growing criticism in EU member states that the rate of vaccination was slow compared to other countries. The U.S. and the U.K. have already started supplying two vaccines, vaccinating more than 5 million and more than 1 million, respectively.
In EU member states, Pfizer-Bioentech vaccination began in earnest for the first time on the 27th of last month, but in the last week or so, there were hundreds of thousands of people who received the vaccine, Reuters said.
Unlike Pfizer vaccine, which requires ultra-low temperature freezing at -70 degrees Celsius, Modena vaccine can be stored at -20 degrees Celsius, making the supply process easier.
However, there are also observations that the availability of modders or vaccines will not immediately speed up vaccination in the EU.
Some member states may not have ordered all of their modder or vaccine quotas, Politico said.
According to the German government, the country will receive 50 million of the 160 million doses of modders or vaccines secured by the EU Commission. This is because some member states have not ordered all of their quotas because the vaccine is too expensive.
In the EU vaccine contract price information leaked last month, Modena was 18 dollars (about 20,000 won) per dose, Pfizer-Bioentech was 12 euros (about 16,000 won), and German biopharmaceutical company Curebag 10 euros 13,000 won), etc., Modena is the most expensive.
The US-based Moderna is also evaluated to have limited capacity in Europe. Unlike Pfizer-Bioentech’s own factories in Germany and Belgium, Moderna relies on partners in Europe, Reuters said.
Modena did not disclose specific details such as how much it could supply right away, but the first shipment in the EU is expected to be small, Reuters added.
