The Ministry of Justice resigns on the 4th and begins the work of the replacement of former Prosecutor General Yoon Seok-yeol. It is certain that the election of the next prosecutor general will be after the 4/7 re-election. At the place of’Post Yoon Seok-yeol’, Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office Lee Seong-yoon and Prosecutor General Cho Nam-gwan are prominently discussed, and external personnel talk to complete the prosecution reform.
Starting this week, the Ministry of Justice will begin the formation of the Prosecutor-General’s Candidate Recommendation Committee to elect the successor to the prosecutor-general of former Prosecutor General Yoon. Minister of Justice Park Beom-gye said on the 5th that “we have begun to make practical preparations for the formation of the nomination committee for the presidential candidate.”
It is known that the Ministry of Justice is proceeding with the process of selecting a candidate nominating committee consisting of nine members. The Ministry of Justice is planning to speed up the formation of the candidate recommendation committee to minimize the gap between the prosecutor general’s office, but it will take a considerable amount of time to actually recommend a candidate. The legal profession is expected to recommend candidates in mid-April, taking into account the previous cases.
Previously, when former Prosecutor General Chae Dong-wook resigned in 2013, it took 24 days to form a candidate recommendation committee after the announcement of the company, and 50 days at the time of former prosecutor general Kim Soo-nam’s resignation in 2017. As there is strong public opinion that the 4·7 re-election should not be influenced outside of physical time, there are observations that the candidates will be reorganized only in mid-April.
The candidates for the next president are Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office Lee Seong-yoon and Cho Nam-gwan serving as prosecutor general. Prosecutor Lee is a pro-government figure. However, the situation is being investigated as a suspect for the illegal departure ban of Kim Hak-e, former Vice Minister of Justice. Acting Assistant Cho was the head of the National Intelligence Service’s Redemption Clearing TF Team for the current government, and is evaluated for his excellent ability to resolve disagreements and mediate.
For the amicable prosecution reform, the appointment of former prosecutors is also predicted. Bong-wook, former deputy prosecutor of the Supreme Prosecutors’ Office, and former vice ministers of the Ministry of Justice Kim Oh-soo and Lee Geum-ro emerge as candidates.
Meanwhile, the prosecution, in confusion over former President Yun’s blitz resignation, initiates an internal crackdown. On the 8th, Acting Assistant Cho holds a meeting of the heads of the National High Prosecutors’ Office on the 8th to discuss countermeasures, such as the promotion of legislation by the investigative agency.
