POSCO-SK Future Car Alliance… Development of new lightweight materials

Sharing and researching plastic and steel technology
Taewon Choi and Jungwoo Choi, the first joint project

POSCO and SK Innovation will jointly develop new lightweight materials necessary for electric vehicle manufacturing. This is the first joint project promoted by the’electric vehicle alliance’ between SK Group Chairman Choi Tae-won and POSCO Chairman Jeong-woo Choi, who put ESG (environmental, social, governance) management first.

POSCO President Kim Hak-dong and SK Global Chemical President Na Gyeong-soo signed a business agreement to develop lightweight composite materials for vehicles at the POSCO Center in Daechi-dong, Seoul. SK Global Chemical is a subsidiary of SK Innovation’s petrochemical business. He explained that he agreed to the need for innovative electric vehicle materials and joined hands.

The two companies decided to share the production and processing technology of plastic materials and steel materials. This is a rare case in which each company shares its technology from the R&D stage. The purpose of collaboration is to develop a steel-plastic composite material that is lighter and harder than existing vehicle parts.

In the industry, POSCO and SK Innovation are expected to conduct research and development on composite materials that can be applied to the production of electric vehicle battery packs, plastic materials that maximize adhesion to steel materials, and vehicle parts materials that withstand external shocks such as automobile frames. watching.

There is also a prospect that the number of cases of collaboration between SK Group and POSCO will increase with this agreement. SK Group is promoting electric vehicle battery related businesses through SK Innovation. POSCO is focusing on the battery material business such as secondary batteries through its subsidiary, POSCO Chemical.

President Kim said, “We will prepare for the future eco-friendly car era by jointly developing other materials such as plastics as well as steel-based vehicle materials.” President Na said, “The two companies that produce and process chemical and steel materials will create synergy, and the development of new materials for vehicles suitable for the future car era will accelerate.”
