POSCO Chemical’s cathode material Gwangyang plant 4th stage expansion started

Operation in 2023… Annual production capacity expanded to a total of 100,000 tons

POSCO Chemical begins expansion of cathode material Gwangyang plant in the 4th stage

In response to the rapid growth of the electric vehicle battery market, POSCO Chemical is planning to expand the production line of the cathode material Gwangyang Plant.

On the 23rd, POSCO Chemical started construction of the 4th stage expansion construction of the cathode material Gwangyang factory in Gwangyang, Jeollanam-do.

The production capacity of the cathode material Gwangyang Plant, which is expanded by this construction, is 30,000 tons per year.

It plans to produce a high-nickel NCMA cathode material for a 3rd generation next-generation electric vehicle battery that can run 500km or more with a single charge, and aims to operate in 2023 with a total investment of KRW 275.8 billion.

When the 4th stage expansion of the Gwangyang plant is completed, POSCO Chemical will expand its cathode material production capacity to a total of 100,000 tons per year.

100,000 tons of cathode materials can be used for 1.1 million 60 ㎾h-class electric vehicle batteries.

POSCO Chemical completed the construction of a 10,000-ton cathode material Gumi factory in 2018, followed by a 5,000-ton high-nickel cathode material plant in the Yulchon Industrial Complex in Gwangyang in 2019, and a 25,000 ton-scale second-stage factory in 2020. Was completed.

Currently, the 3rd stage construction is underway with a scale of 30,000 tons with the goal of operation in November 2022.

POSCO Chemical plans to establish a global production system by promoting the establishment of overseas factories in Europe and China along with the phased expansion of the Gwangyang plant.

Through this, the plan is to increase competitiveness by supplying large-scale quantities to global battery companies and automakers in a timely manner.

In the long term, through advanced development of next-generation materials and continuous investment, we aim to achieve mass production capacity of 400,000 tons of cathode materials and 260,000 tons of anode materials by 2030, achieving a 20% global market share and annual sales of 23 trillion won in the secondary battery material business. Built up.

At the commemorative speech of the groundbreaking ceremony, POSCO Chemical President Min Kyung-jun said, “This expansion enables us to stably supply the highest quality products to our customers.” I will have world-class business competitiveness.”
