In response to the rapid growth of the electric vehicle battery market, POSCO Chemical is planning to expand the production line of the cathode material Gwangyang Plant.

POSCO Chemical announced on the 23rd that it has begun construction of the 4th stage expansion construction of the cathode material Gwangyang factory in Gwangyang, Jeollanam-do. The expansion of the production capacity of the cathode material Gwangyang Plant is expected to produce a high-nickel NCMA (nickel, cobalt, manganese, aluminum) cathode material for the 3rd generation next-generation electric vehicle battery that can run more than 500 km per charge with a total scale of 30,000 tons. A total of 275.8 billion won is invested, and it is aimed at operating in 2023. When the 4th stage expansion of the Gwangyang plant is completed, POSCO Chemical will expand its cathode material production capacity to 100,000 tons. 100,000 tons of cathode materials can be used for 1.1 million 60Kwh-class electric vehicle batteries.

Following the completion of the 10,000-ton cathode material factory in Gumi in 2018, POSCO Chemical completed the 5,000-ton high-nickel cathode material Gwangyang factory in the Yulchon Industrial Complex in Gwangyang in 2019 and the second-stage factory with a capacity of 25,000 tons in 2020. , Currently, 3 phase construction is underway with a scale of 30,000 tons with the goal of operation in November 2022.

POSCO Chemical plans to build a global production system by promoting the establishment of overseas factories in Europe and China along with the phased expansion of its Gwangyang plant, and will contribute to enhancing customer competitiveness by supplying it to global battery companies and automakers in a timely manner.

“This expansion enables us to stably supply the highest quality products to our customers,” said Min Kyung-jun, president of POSCO Chemical. “With the POSCO Group, we have further accelerated investments in building a raw material value chain, securing technology, and expanding mass production capabilities. We will lead the market with business competitiveness.”

POSCO Chemical has secured technological leadership such as advanced development of next-generation materials and established a mass production system through continuous investment.By 2030, POSCO Chemical has a production capacity of 40,000 to 400,000 tons of cathode materials and 44,000 to 260,000 tons of anode materials. It plans to expand its global market share to 20% and annual sales of over 23 trillion won.
