Pope Francis said, “I also kneel on the streets of Myanmar and appeal to the end of the violence,” saying, “I also kneel on the streets of Myanmar.”

On the 17th (local time), at the end of the general meeting of demand, the pope said, referring to the situation in Myanmar, which lasted for more than a month, and expressed concern that “many people, especially young people, are losing their lives,” a foreign press reported. Earlier this month, a picture of a local Myanmar nun kneeling in front of an armed police force trying to crush protesters and appealing to refrain from violence was spread through the social network service (SNS) and the media around the world, causing a great repercussion. The Pope did not directly mention the nun, but it is interpreted that he made a remark, “I also lean on my knees and appeal” after encountering this photo.

On the 3rd, the Pope called for the international community’s intervention efforts to prevent further innocent sacrifices, saying, “The wishes of the people of Myanmar cannot be beaten by violence.” He also expressed solidarity to the citizens.

The Myanmar military ministry took power through a coup on the 1st of last month, and it is estimated that at least 200 people have died so far due to the firing of live ammunition by the Myanmar military police.
