On Easter on the 4th, Park Young-sun and Democratic Party candidate Oh Se-hoon, candidate Oh Se-hoon, were politely greeting each other. It was at SaRang Church in Seocho-gu, Seoul where a joint worship service was held. It is not unusual for candidates to visit the church on the most important holiday of Christianity. But did you know that SaRang Church built a chapel by illegally occupying a road in Seoul? SaRang Church purchased the land in Seocho-gu, opposite the Supreme Court in 2009, and started building a new church. At the time, Seocho-gu Office (then Park Seong-joong mayor) granted road occupancy and construction permits to use 1077㎡ of underground space of Chamnari-gil, a public road around Seocho Station. It was permitted to use the underground part of the public road as part of the SaRang Church chapel. There was a controversy over preferential treatment, lawmakers in Seocho-gu filed a lawsuit to revoke the permit for occupying the road and building, and after a long trial, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of the plaintiff in October 2019. According to the Supreme Court’s ruling, Seocho-gu Office ordered Sarangui Church to restore its original state, but Sarangui Church filed an administrative lawsuit against this in March 2020, and the trial is still ongoing. Since it is an illegal building, it ignores the final judgment of the Supreme Court that it must be restored to its original state, and is enduring with additional lawsuits. In this situation, it is significant that candidates for the mayor of Seoul visited the SaRang Church, which was created with a cost of 300 billion won, and gave an Easter joint service. This is because it shows the entanglement of the strong large church power and political power in Korean society. Recently, the Easter United Worship was held in a mega church. It was held at Yoido Full Gospel Church in 2019, and last year, it was held on a small scale at Saemoonan Church in Seoul due to the spread of Corona 19. This year’s Easter joint worship was held in the order of the Korean Presbyterians’ Association, and accordingly, it was held at SaRang Church, where more than 6,000 people can worship together. Whether SaRang Church intended or not, the Seoul Mayor candidates appealed for support in search of a space that illegally occupied public roads. I didn’t even know that SaRang Church was illegally occupying the road. On the day of the Easter worship service, Candidate Park said at a conference with an internet media outlet, “I know that the Sarang Church problem was a conflict related to the occupation of roads in Seocho-gu Office. SaRang Church was to have an Easter service. “I will look more into the road occupancy problem and the conflict-related areas.” Easter is the day when Jesus, who came into the world to come to a low place, was born again. What kind of resurrection are the candidates of the mayor of Seoul who visited the SaRang Church that day? By Lee Wan, staff reporter
