After suspicion that the employees of the Korea Land and Housing Corporation (LH) systematically speculated in the new cities of Gwangmyeong and Siheung, Gyeonggi Province, reports that politicians and public officials bought land in new cities and development sites across the country have been reported.
According to the meeting of lawyers for democratic society (Minbyun) on the 5th, there have been several reports on the existing 3rd new towns, such as Changneung in Goyang, Gyeonggi Province, and Wangsuk in Namyangju. Along with Gwangmyeong and Siheung, Busan Daejeo and Gwangju Mountain, which were designated as new cities, were included. Some of the contents of the report are specific enough to specify the address.
“There are reports that public officials and politicians seem to have speculated not only in new towns, but also in planned development sites across the country,” said Minbyun’s attorney of the Minsheng Economic Committee. “It is a situation that we need to collect all the reports and investigate.”
The Participatory Solidarity and Minbyun, who first publicized the allegations of LH employees’ speculation on land in the new city, are investigating additional speculation by LH employees in Gwangmyeong and Siheung.
However, Minbyun and the Participation Solidarity are in a position to observe the results of the government’s total investigation before revealing further suspicions. Attorney Seo explained, “We will investigate the report separately from the government investigation, but we do not plan to announce any additional information,” he said. “We plan to respond after watching the government announcement.”
Minbyun and the Participation Solidarity held a press conference on the 2nd and raised suspicion that LH employees had previously purchased 23,028㎡ (about 7,000 pyeong) of land in Gwangmyeong and Siheung new cities announced as new public housing sites last month for 10 billion won. As the excommunication grew, the government formed a joint investigation team with the participation of the Prime Minister’s Office, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, the Ministry of Public Administration and Security, the Police Agency, Gyeonggi-do, and Incheon, and is conducting a full investigation of allegations of speculation in the third new city by LH employees.
