Major U.S. companies are declaring to stop donating political funds due to the invasion of Congress. It is analyzed because of disappointment in the political world. In particular, the trend of discontinuing donations is expected to continue for a while as companies’ reluctance to the Republican Party increases.
On the 11th (local time), local media such as the Washington Post reported that major companies such as Google, Facebook, and Microsoft (MS) have repeatedly announced their intention to suspend political funding. Google issued a statement that day, criticizing the invasion of parliament and the movement to reject the result of the presidential election, and announced that it would suspend all political funding activities through the Political Action Committee (PAC).
Facebook also declared that “in the first quarter of this year, it will stop donating political funds to all PACs.” After Microsoft said it would cut off political funding in the first quarter, it said it could discuss with the staff about the invasion of Congress and take further action.
In addition, automobile manufacturer Ford announced that it would stop donating political funds on the same day, and announced that it would stop paying political donations to global investment bank Goldman Sachs and Coca-Cola, the world’s largest beverage company.
Some companies have stopped donating political funds aimed at the Republican Party, taking responsibility for the invasion of parliament and objection to the presidential election. Marriott, the world’s largest hotel chain, has decided to stop donating political funds to 147 Republican Senators and House Representatives who refused to win the presidential election of Joe Biden. Investment bank Morgan Stanley, credit card company American Express, chemical company Dow, and lodging-sharing company Airbnb have also announced a cessation of political funding for some Republicans.
Reuters said, “After the US Congress was attacked by protesters, the backlash of large corporations against the political world is growing. It seems that major US corporations will be reluctant to raise funds for the Republican Party for a while.”
