Philips announces global survey results for World Sleep Day

[의학신문·일간보사=오인규 기자] On the 19th, Philips, a leading company in the field of health technology, announced the results of’Global Sleep Trends After Corona 19′, a global sleep survey conducted on 13,000 people in 13 countries including 999 Koreans on World Sleep Day.

In this survey, the contents related to overall sleep health management, such as changes in sleep that appeared after Corona 19, sleep satisfaction, and efforts to improve sleep, were investigated and analyzed.

As a result of the survey, 48% of global respondents said they were stressed by Corona 19. It was found that 61% of Koreans are under stress from Corona 19. Stress was the number one factor that interferes with good sleep, cited by global respondents (24%) and Koreans (28%).

70% of global respondents said they were experiencing sleep problems after Corona 19, which include waking up at night (43%), inability to fall asleep (34%), and difficulty maintaining sleep (27%). I picked it up.

It was found that 62% of Koreans also suffered from sleep problems after the outbreak of Corona 19. Koreans were also in the same order as waking up during the night (39%), inability to fall asleep (24%), and difficulty maintaining sleep (17%).

When asked about sleep satisfaction, 55% of the globals answered that they were satisfied. On the other hand, only 4 out of 10 Koreans answered that they were satisfied with their sleep, and it was still below the global average. Sleep time in Korea was also shorter than the global average. The world’s weekdays sleep time was 6.9 hours and weekends 7.8 hours, but Koreans’ weekdays sleep time was 6.7 hours and weekends 7.4 hours.

In particular, 58% of all respondents said they were getting enough sleep, while only 35% of Korean respondents said they were getting enough sleep. In addition, only 29% of Koreans said they felt refreshed after sleeping, which was lower than the global average (59%). This was the lowest among the 13 countries surveyed.

Experts point out that in addition to sleeping in bed, cell phone use can also be a major cause of sleep disturbance. However, according to a survey from 13 countries this year, 84% of respondents said they were using their mobile phones before and after sleeping in bed, showing a significant increase from 74% in 2020.

Koreans also responded that one in two (55%) said they would use their cell phone as soon as they got up. In addition, it was found that Koreans are most likely to seek help from’TV watching (33%)’ to improve their sleep.

Sleep apnea, in which respiratory arrest or hypopnea frequently occurs during sleep, is a typical sleep disorder that causes various cardio-cerebrovascular complications along with symptoms such as severe snoring and daytime drowsiness during sleep.

Of the global respondents, 12% of respondents said they had sleep apnea, showing an increase from last year (9%). However, only 18% of them answered that they are actively treating sleep apnea through the use of a positive pressure device, which is a typical treatment method for sleep apnea.

Even in the case of Koreans, those who said they had sleep apnea were 8% this year, up from 5% last year. However, 15% of respondents said they were using positive pressure therapy, which is more than doubled compared to 6% last year.

On the other hand, the number of patients who gave up in the middle of using a positive pressure device decreased by half (5%) compared to last year (10%), confirming that treatment compliance was also improved. The Korean government recognizes the risk of sleep apnea and has been applying health insurance to the polysomnography and positive pressure therapy, which is a global standard treatment, since July 2018.

Philips Korea’s sleep and respiratory care division CEO Kim Yeon-jae said, “It is a particularly difficult time to keep your sleep health due to changes in life patterns and physiological rhythms due to Corona 19.” If you feel difficult, it is necessary to find a specialized medical institution and actively receive diagnosis and treatment.”
