Peptic ulcers, including gastric ulcer and duodenal ulcer, are so common that 1 in 10 Koreans suffers more than once in their lifetime. It occurs when the mucous membrane of the stomach and duodenum loses the balance of the attack factor represented by gastric acid and the defense factor of the mucus component.

When peptic ulcer occurs, heartburn or stabbing abdominal pain is most often present after a meal, but symptoms appear or have no symptoms regardless of whether or not to eat. When the peptic ulcer worsens, black stool or hematopoiesis caused by bleeding may be caused. If the symptoms are severe, gastrointestinal perforation may occur in which holes are formed in the walls of the stomach and duodenum.

One of the important causes of peptic ulcer is Helicobacter pylori. Koreans are very susceptible to peptic ulcers due to the characteristics of food culture, and the spread of Helicobacter pylori is good, and the infection rate is high. Often, antithrombotic drugs such as aspirin are taken for the treatment and prevention of vascular diseases, or peptic ulcers occur when taking anti-inflammatory analgesics.

In order to prevent peptic ulcer, it is most important to avoid environments that promote the secretion of stomach acid. If you are infected with Helicobacter pylori, disinfection treatment should be performed first, and care should be taken to prevent re-infection afterwards. It is recommended to reduce excessive use of alcohol, smoking, coffee, chocolate, carbonated drinks, and seasonings. If you are taking drugs that can damage the gastric mucosa, you should receive an additional prescription for gastric acid inhibitors or gastric mucosa to prevent ulcers.

Professor Choi Hyeok-soon of the Department of Gastroenterology, Anam Hospital, Korea University said, “Peptic ulcers often recur if not properly treated or progress to intractable ulcers.” Therefore, it is better to be treated according to the doctor’s prescription.”
